Try Fisher Scientific or Spectrum Chemical or any other lab chemical supplier. You will need to know what strength you want. It usually comes as a 40% solution but can come in a more dilute solution also. Ferric chloride is also readily available from most open market chemical suppliers such as Brentag and Ashland and others, as it is very commonly used for wastewater treatment and raw water clarification. However, you may not be able to get it in less than 5 gallon quantities.

just got off the radio shack web site did a search for it none in any stores in my area so if you guys have it in your area you better buy all you can

It's common as chlorox in the hobby electronics stores. Same stuff. Radio Shack didn't invent it nor have the market cornered. Any hobby electronics store that caters to those who create their own circuit boards (equivalent to reloading) will have it.

I remember a pretty good discussion here about browning damascus and then using an etchant. Cant seem to find it now. Can anyone help?

It's common as chlorox in the hobby electronics stores. Same stuff. Radio Shack didn't invent it nor have the market cornered. Any hobby electronics store that caters to those who create their own circuit boards (equivalent to reloading) will have it. NOT THE SAME AS CHLOROX !!! Klunkermeister (Russ Rupple) tried to use Chlorox as an etchant. It only worked poorly on poor quality twist, as I remember. Just to set the record straight. Best, John

That it's the same stuff as Chlorox?...I read him as saying that it's as common as Chlorox and the stuff sold in any electronics hobby shop is the same stuff that was sold by Radio Shack.....Funny how as I get older I get more and more things wrong oftener and oftener.....Art

Sorry for the confusing statement. I didn't mean it was the same stuff as Chlorox, just that it was as common to find. Also, that the ferric chloride solution that Radio Shack has is not unique in any way.

None of the RadioShed stores within the radius of their Comador64 store finder system ever have the stuff, but as already pointed out just call a computer/electronics hobby type place and they always seem to have it. They'll usualy respond to the spoken words 'circuit board etchant' or 'PCB etchant' instead of ferric chloride though. I did read one internet chemist describe making his own by dissolving a fist full of clean finishing nails in muriatic acid..outdoors of course..When the reaction stops and it cools down you have ferric chloride,, I guess(?) Sounds alot like making one of the older rust blue concoctions. Must be a connection in there somewhere! Muriatic is hydrochloric afterall. I'll buy mine as long as it's convenient..There's even a few purveyors on EBay that sell the stuff.
