I think you have nailed it. The water table is very thin at that point and obviously not up to the strain that can be put on the area by careless gun handling. I am, like you, considering welding a piece in to repair the damage.
Mr. Murphy: Methinks the crossmember that you see in the picture which is lacking on your 5E action is the hammer cocking bar. When the hammer is fired said bar lays down against the floor plate.

Yup, and even though my receiver is not identical to yours, the metal at that point is very thin on my receiver also. Walter, what is the hole in the front end of my water table that is not in Glenn's water table?

In my experience, gun manufacturers in those times dealt quite regularly with individual customers as well as hardware stores who only sporadically placed an order. They did what they had to do to sell a gun. Murphy Been trying to remember, but cant recall a Sinclair family running a store in Frenchtown, so my guess is a private individual. Next time I'm back home, I'll check to see what the local paper has for information. Gets me curious about what kind of trap shooting may have been going on in farm country.

View blank form Wow, excellent, I think you've got him. I need to become more internet friendly. The son, Howard should have been around when Mom was growing up. I'll ask her if she remembers a Sinclair family.

Seems there was a Hugh, or Hew, Sinclair living in Frenchtown years ago. Living on Harrison Ave, the main drag through town. He may have been Mayor at one time. Maybe this is son Howard?.
Interesting to find out where JJ Sinclair took his fine Ithaca to shoot trap. Maybe a local hunting club - would someone buy a specialized trap gun for Sunday traps and beer?

It's a strange world out there. My entire ATA career happened in one year and a couple of hundred birds. However, I probably own thirty trap guns and am looking for more. Oh well.
