I was wondering how many would be tempted to do the following: You buy an extra set of barrels and forend for a gun and send them back to the factory to have them fitted to the gun. Now you have an extra set of barrels for your gun. What if you decide to have the serial numbers removed and changed to the gun so all the numbers matched. Would it be dishonest to do this if the factory matched everything? I remember when I bought my Beretta single barrel trap gun. I went to Beretta and had them take a set of new O/U barrels and fit them to my gun. This was a package deal when I bought the gun. They also had the serial numbers match, too. So would it be dishonest to do it with a set of used barrels to increase the value of the gun? Any opinions?

Yes.

If you have a gun re-barreled in the UK, the barrel maker will not put the original maker's name on the tubes or rib. Only the current owner of the company is able to authorise this.

As they needed to be fit to your shotgun there is good reason to have them properly numbered. If you should sell the gun it is the representations you make or the disclosure you should make and do not that could rise to dishonesty. If someone assumes to buy that set as "original and correct"- well its never going to be that is it?

Should a person sell the gun as a matched set, it would be misrepresentation. If you sold me the gun, with the conditions described in your message, it would not be misrepresentation. With the turn-over in guns, it's a tough call. Would you be an accomplice if another owner flogged them as matched original from the factory?

If it's factory work I don't see anything wrong with it.

Whatever happened to buying and selling what is, instead of what was? If the barrels are well fitted then it is a gun with two sets of fitted barrels. I see no problem.

For sure, having the numbers match increases the chances that the barrels will remain together as well.

The obsession with factory original just does not compute for me. If it is in great condition, it is a gun in great condition. It is worth exactly that, not more not less.

Fitting barrels, fine.
Factory fitted and numbered to gun, fine.

After market serial change, NOT fine! Unless, documented and marked as such.

I thinks that it's pretty easy to decide.
What is the more valuable of the two:

A. A two barrel set shipped from the factory in that configuration.
or
B. A two barrel set with the second barrel added at a later date.

Any attempt to portray something that it's not is....dishonest.
