eugene - welcome and thanks for your post. We can use all the technology we can get. Chemist? Metalurgest? Some of each?

Thank you Eugene and welcome to the board. This is a great place, lots of really nice people and very few that aren't nice. Just a nice place to visit particularly if you're a double gun enthusiast.

BTW I'm a geologist by profession but also one of these guys that remembers all sorts of odd information about odd subjects (but so far nothing that's made me rich).

Thank you one and all. I'm in the hunt for some .004" steel shim stock, thanks for your input. John C.

Two pieces of Scotch tape will equal .004" and it is much faster and you probably already have it at home.

It is indeed the old Eugene in a fancy new weskit.

After the Board changes my old handle and password did not work; nor could I recover them via the automated service. I just reregistered to simplify things.

Rocketman..I started my working life as a metallurgist in and around Birmingham and the Black Country. As a youth I knew some of the old Birmingham gunsmiths and outworkers. They used to come into the retail shop of W Canning & Co. to buy waxes oils, shellac, polishing compounds and mops, and stuff like that, plus "Comet Gun Blue". I used to make this goop in the the companies' Manufacturing Lab. Forty years later reading Angier there it was...same formula though not the same name of course. Memories eh?

After that I went down the heavy industrial chemical route...plating, phosphating, paint for vehicles plus a bit of work on Government bangie thingies. I finished up in charge of a chemical disaster recovery outfit....that was great fun.

I'm retired now, living in a little cottage in Wales. One wife, four dogs, a zillion pheasants, and no worries. If I never look down a microscope again or stand up to my arse in something nasty, corrosive and smelly it will suit me fine!

Regards
Eug
