It was news today, perhaps tomorrow. Two weeks from now, while we're still hearing about the nature and extent of his dysfunctional family, his deprived upbringing, his drug use, his fascination with guns and poetry, how and why multiple people in positions of authority should have and could have seen this coming and helped the poor lad....the coverage WILL be lurid.

I always followed the advice of Chief Justice Earl Warren who said, " I always turn to the sports page first, because it tells of men's accomplishments. Whereas the front page tells of their failures." But anymore, I have a hard time believing that.

What’s sad is that with an ever increasing population we’ll see more and more headlines like this just because there are more people in the world. It’s like the predicament the airline industry is in, even as air safety improves, the total number of flights is also dramatically increasing, hence the number of crashes can increase even as the odds of an individual crash happening goes down (based on a percentage of the total number of flights). However, when the news media gets hold of the story the entire thing is blown out of proportion to what the actual percentages of actual crashes/flights are.

One hundred years ago there may have been a higher percentage of such shooting instances; however that would be based on a world population of one billion. Today with a world population of six billion+ even if the percentage of school shootings has gone way down, you can still have a much larger total number of shootings. The heck of it is, the guy could have gone raging through the crowd swinging a sword and actually killed and injured more people.

I don't know why we should be surprised by media coverage of such events considering the never-ending gargantuan appetite for "news" of any trivial comments or acts by celebrity no-talents and losers. A rampage always trumps in societies celebrating mediocrity.

Its not the guns, its the drugs...

ADD, ADHD and Antidepressant Drugs
SSRIs like Ritalin, Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac have dangerous effects
© Victoria Anisman-Reiner

Mar 8, 2007

Dr. Ann Blake Tracy makes a case that SSRI medications don't work the way doctors believe and may be responsible for some of the most horrific crimes of the last decade.
According to the U.S. National Institute of Health, an estimated 3-5% of North American children have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Many of these kids, as well as adults, make use of prescription drugs to help them manage the impact of AD/HD on their lives. There are persuasive arguments both for and against the use of psychotropic drugs to treat ADHD adults and kids. As is true of most medications, cases of severe injury or death because of side effects appear to be few and far between… but as you consider the information below, please ask yourself: Would you like to risk that you or your children might be the few who do experience these results?

Over 6 million children, including roughly 10% of all 6-18 year old boys, are on Ritalin “to get by in school” – despite the fact that there is no scientific evidence proving that a chemical imbalance in the brain is the cause of AD/HD.
Between 1995 and 1999, the use of Ritalin for children under 7 increased by 23%, and the use of Prozac and similar drugs went up by 580% in the same age group, even though these drugs were not approved for children under 18.
Prozac is the only drug listed in the 1999 Physician’s Desk Reference Family Guide with “violent behaviour” as a side effect. The same guide describes the common side effects of Ritalin as nervousness, insomnia, nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, variations in blood pressure and pulse rate, angina, abdominal pain, toxic psychosis, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and even depression.
The withdrawal symptoms of SSRI meds usually worsen the toxic and violent side effects. If you are considering going off antidepressant drugs or medication for AD/HD, please read this warning first (link).

Dr. Ann Blake Tracy is the author of Prozac: Panacaea or Pandora and an expert witness in murder and murder/suicide cases in which the perpetrators were taking SSRI drugs. In the book and on her website, she makes the case that SSRI antidepressant and ADD medications have dangerous side effects not only for the people taking them, but potentially for everyone.

Dr. Tracey argues vehemently that:

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (“SSRIs”) do not function as drug companies have led medical experts to believe. By slowing the uptake of serotonin by cells, excess serotonin is left working on the brain and other systems. Contrary to popular belief, research has shown for the past thirty years that high levels of serotonin “produce initial euphoria, psychosis, mania, aggression, organic brain disease - especially mental retardation at a greater rate in children, autism, Alzheimer's, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, anorexia, nightmares, abortions, migraines, hot flashes, irritability, sleeplessness, sleep apnea, chest pain, shortness of breath… decrease in reaction time, compulsions for alcohol and other drugs,” and more. (Ann Blake Tracy, http://www.drugawareness.org/Archives/Miscellaneous/MRnextgen.html, accessed March 7, 2007)

Once the FDA has approved a drug, doctors are allowed to prescribe it to children even if it has not been tested for safety in kids.

Recent studies have been proposed to test the safety and efficacy of SSRIs in two-year old children, and drugs for manic depression and anxiety for month-old babies… which begs the question, why would children so young possibly need these drugs?

Most SSRI drug users report feeling fuzzy, out of touch with their emotions and distanced from the events of their own lives.

Ely Lily - the manufacturer of Prozac and countless other pharmaceutical drugs - reports that ADD patients prescribed Prozac are twelve times more likely to commit suicide than those with ADD who are not taking it. Dr. Tracy’s website is full of horror stories about people who, while on SSRI meds, experienced homicidal or suicidal thoughts and/or attempted to kill themselves or other people – often family members – many with horrifying results:

One teacher tried to hire a student to kill the school’s principal.

A daughter attempted to hire someone to kill her mother (and after being withdrawn from the drugs reports that even as she was doing it, she didn’t know why).

One teenager documents a 30-point drop in his IQ while he was taking an SSRI drug.

Countless stories exist of parents who killed their children and other family members while taking antidepressants or anti-psychotic meds.

For every person who seems to benefit from medication for ADD, ADHD or depression, Dr. Tracy believes there sits a time bomb waiting for the right trigger to explode.

So why are the drugs still on the market? Money, reports Dr. Tracy. Drug companies rake in millions of dollars every day, and will continue to do so until their patents expire.

One of Dr. Tracy's suggestions, for those who are ready to wean off of SSRIs, is to use the essential oils for ADD and ADHD and some of the same essential oils that can help fight depression. For more information, see also Natural Remedies for ADD and ADHD.

Maybe Switzerland have got it right? Where it is a legal offence not to have a firearm in the house for self protection and of course to have had firearms training.Or maybe it's just the Toblerone chocolate bar that makes them a peaceful nation?

If the above drugs were not given, our classrooms would be a jungle! Gotta sedate the few for the many.
Hunting is not the culture of the gun, they don't hunt. It's the "nine" and pop-a-cap cultural rap they know - and what they do!

Lowell -- Your comment "If the above drugs were not given, our classrooms would be a jungle!" I hope is meant to be sarcastic!

I am in the classroom, and I can tell you the drugs to not make things better. Last year, I had a kid in my classroom who 5 years earlier while on serious psychotrophic drugs, brought a gun to school and threatened to kill a teacher.

After they got his dosage "right" and was "rehabilitated" he was allowed to mainstream into a high school class (my class) and we were not notified of his past. It was only after he threatened to kill me and a female student that I was able to find out more about his history. He wore a black trench coat to class everyday, was fascinated with vampires and horror films like Saul, and was on a list of psychotrophic drugs longer than my arm --over 3500 mg! He was always drinking water because the drugs gave him cotton mouth. He also heard voices and saw things that did not exist. The other members of his family all had locks on their bedroom doors and he had attempted to kill his sister.

Worst thing his I had to document all this behavior in order to build a case to have him removed from the classroom. It took a full semester before I succeeded in convincing the his mother and the administration (who was just worried about not violating his legal rights to an education) that he needed to go back to a school for psychotic children (despite the fact that he was a senior). The school district just wanted the guy to get a H.S. diploma so he could be released from the system, because under the law, such students are eligible for education resources paid for by the district until age 21.

Given this kid's history, the fact that he had brought a gun to school and pointed it at a teacher, and the fact that he had threatened to kill me, it was the only time I have ever seriously entertained the idea of breaking a federal law and carrying a concealed firearm to school in order to defend myself (I used be a Federal Agent and know a bit about carrying a gun). I chose to obey the law instead and sweated out each and everyday for 3 1/2 months until the kid was finally removed from the class. When he was there, I kept my classroom door unlocked in order to let help in if necessary and when he was not there I locked my door to keep him out --escorting the students who were supposed to be there into the room. It was just short of a nightmare.

For those interested in the relationship between these violent acts and the drugs given to our kids, please see this video.

Also, in regards to rap, ever notice that the vast majority of these massacre shooters are not black? Reason being is statistically the majority of blacks are from low social economic status backgrounds and cannot afford to send their kids to a psychiatrist and get then pay for Prozac. Many black kids who misbehave just get a old fashioned ass whooping usually (all to often from grandma). As blacks continue to become more prosperous (albeit slowly) we will eventually see one, but for now, all these shooters are from middle class and upper middle class backgrounds --those who have the resources to buy and pay for such medications.

You do know that most high school/college students do not listen to Peter,Paul and Mary. Right! If guns are mentioned at all in this age group, it wouldn't be from a weekend squirrel hunt.
Today's gun culture is from gangster rap drive-by CDs and videos.
The 410 is unheard of - not so with the nine!
