In the Oct.-Nov issue of handloader magazine there was an excellent article by Wallace Labisky on Tungsten Super Shot made in China. The make up is 95% tungsten and 5% nickel and iron.

A couple of highlights. They were patterning onto a piece of 3/8 plywood with a steel backing to catch the pellets. None of the pellets recovered were deformed.

With cyl choke, it was shooting 70% patterns at 40 yards.

In the two modern shotguns Labisky shot the ammo in, there were scored places in the barrels, starting at the forcing cones.

Although it can be loaded to lower pressures, until they come out with a better wad, I don't think I would even shoot it in a modern gun.

I am inclined to believe this is the same shot advertised as "nice shot".

Ouch. Scored at the forcing cones is about as bad as it gets. Might be the shot is not contained fully in the wad. Certainly not safe to use in our old doubles.

At leeast the stufff advertised as HeviShot Classic Doubles shot is advertized to be tungsten+iron in a tin matrix. One can presume that the tin (Sn) is the soft matrix material and tungsten(W) and iron are what raise density of Sn-matrix to that of lead alloy shot.

I think I understand correctly that "niceshot" is same product of EcoTungstes as is HeviShot Classis Doubles. However, I would love to see convincing evidence of this.

I have a friend that shot quite a bit of Hevishot through a 20 ga. with no ill effects. So I would be inclined to believe that whatever the mixture of Tungsten, iron and nickel, it is not the same hardness.

I wonder if it is a matter of hardness or of adequate shotcups and buffers? IF I understand correctly, buffers are used with HeviShot to reduce bridging of the hard pellets, thereby reducing damage to shotcups and, when shotcups are breached, to forcing cones.

For at least a few seasons, I have enough bismuth and Kent TM loads to see me through. Maybe by then this murky world of non-"steel", non-bismuth, non-Kent TM, nontoxic shot will have become more understood. Perhaps then those without adequate stocks of bismuth and Kent TM will be able to purchase with confidence for their old doubles.

NiceShot and SuperShot are two different things. NiceShot is supposedly old gun friendly, SuperShot is not.
