I measure the pitch by putting a framing square against the butt and letting it contact the reciever/rib area and measure the distance from the muzzle/rib to the framing square. This is the traditional linear measurement for pitch. It has a weakness in that it will not yield a consistant angle, even if the distance to the muzzle is constant, if LOP changes, barrel length changes, etc..
