In the top picture what is that sticking down in front of the trigger loop ?

Right behind the action it looks like the wood is scalloped out ?

Not sure. This gun just hangs in the wall cabinet and gets taken down every few months to be wiped down. Trying to do some research on it brought me to this site. Figured I'd let the experts clue me in on it. serial # is 1xx1

I guess if the internal hammers failed you could tap the pins with a hammer and fire it that way. Just when I thought I'd seen just about everything. Does it have any patent numbers or dates on it anywhere?

I found PAT NOV 23,88 on the lug. No other dates or markings

Those things are cocking indicators. That is D. Kirkwood's patent action. I had one in a lightweight 10 gauge.

What does it say on the gun's rib? I can't make it out.

A guy named Phail will be along soon. He knows just about everything about these guns.

What gauge is it? And what's its overall condition?

Is it for sale?

Thanks

OWD

I thought that they might have been but I've never seen cocking indicators that looked like hammergun firing pins. Except for that I like the looks of the gun.

Kirkwood guns are neat. A friend and I were just looking at one similar yesterday. It was a 12 bore with the Kirkwood patent ejector from the early 1880s. David Kirkwood was from England and eventually came the the U.S. Early on, he had a partnership with Mortimer, who was from the famous gunmaking family in Britain. I think they did not produce any hammerless guns, but I have seen other types. Kirkwood was at Elm St. in Boston and later the business changed to include a sporting goods line. Later the Kirkwood business imported British guns and probably finished them up here, putting various forms of Kirkwood names on them.
