Then, I take it that you can't be taught. Not surprised. Not surprised at all.

No I learn something new almost every day, today it was a JAVA based software application called tomcat.

I know I don't know everything - and have a serious mistrust of those that believe they do.

Actually, the first dead person, cadaver, that I ever had to study, was a male who died of breast cancer. Believe it or not , some males get it and die of it.He did and I know his name. You will not ever know his name from me.I will die at some point and some 20 years ago paid for burn and for-get,and do not care in the least about it.

Robt:

I would tend to agree with you about shooting lead on a "managed" ground - no harm - no foul. My concern is more with hunting with lead and at the many clubs that shoot in more sensative areas. A number of clubs in Wisconsin shoot directly into Lake Michigan. Still others shoot next to lakes and wetlands. Many hunt clubs have tons of lead shot poured onto the same ground year after year. I applaud you for 32 years of working as a wildlife biologist - and I suspect with that type of commitment the environment and resources would come ahead of shooting lead. P.S. I also love shooting vintage.

HLjOe - It's only lame when an opinion is expressed without true knowledge or understanding. In order to understand how and why lead becomes toxic you have to understand the chemisty of lead. Also, if you will remember, bald eagles have gone through a number of population declines in recent history - one because of lead (bounties) and one because of egg shell thinning due to ingestion of DDT laden fish. It's the same reason commorant populations declined drastically - again another fish eater.

Tom C - what would be the best articles concerning eggshell thinning related to DDT to read ?

Question for those that know: Is it possible that the high lead concentrations was due to leaded gasoline? I am specifically thinking about I-5 and HWY 99 which run right through the Pacific Flyway.

I'll take my answer off the air. ;-)

Here's a good article that sumarizes the controversy of DDT and eggshell thinning pretty well. The real discussion on this subject should be whether the human lifes saved by using the DDT, a very, very effective pesticide vs. the environmental damage it caused is worth it's use. That's another topic for another time.

David D. - Actually a few mallards I took this year were a little chewy. Every wonder where all that tire dust went?

Lead is a naturally accuring element...these pesticides and herbicides they are producing are not.
