The latest Shooting Sportsman contains a column by Tom, refuting just about every silly statement contained in the last one. Have to wonder, as some of us did at the time, if Tom even wrote the last column. It made so many outrageous claims about shooting long shells in short chambers, it was hard to believe Tom's usual inquiring mind was even involved. Now, he basically claims decimals were put in the wrong places: 1500 psi should have read 150, 4-5000 should have been 4-500, etc. ????????

Definite improvement . . . although he still seems to think CIP proof standards are voodoo and SAAMI standards are good as gold: "If you fail with the manufacturer and the gun is not proof-tested to SAAMI standards, accept the fact that you own a firearm for which there is no clear information concerning safe shotshell loads."

Did I miss something? I wasn't aware that any guns were proof tested to SAAMI standards. Guns sold in USA are self-certified. So, where does one get a gun proofed to SAAMI?

I think that's semantics, Rocketman. American ammo must meet SAAMI standards. Guns in this country are proof-tested by the makers to handle SAAMI-standard ammo.

A lot of folks without information such as this site are probably passing on bogus information, or at the very least, misleading information.

I think that's semantics, Rocketman. I understand what you're saying, but I'll have to agree with Rocketman. American ammo must meet SAAMI standards. Not really. They're industry standards, not law, and, as Rocketman said, ammunition and firearms produced in this country are self-certified to be within them. The manufacturer's compliance is assumed and relied upon, but who knows? In CIP member countries, CIP standards are law, and ammunition is constantly tested in CIP proof houses. If a given lot fails to test within CIP spec, it's illegal for the manufacturer to sell it. Guns must be proven in CIP proof houses and so marked, or they're illegal to sell. This is why Mr. Roster's statement strikes me as so off the wall. The difference seems more than semantics to me.

Tom's statement about "proof testing to SAAMI standards" is referring to foreign made guns. I've been a fan of Tom Roster since he was practically a kid but these last two articles were very disappointing, including the attempts to correct the first mess.

I think it is more than semantics. A gun can be proofed to "magnum" loads and pressures - some would cover SAAMI standard loads and pressures. Practically, one could proof to include SAAMI, but one can't proof to SAAMI. For example, French magnum (?) , double - triple magnum should include the SAAMI pressure and load ranges.
