400 NE:

Do you have anything in your database that would identify either the "BIW&Co" or the "ST" stamps I mentioned above?

Thanks.

A two letter stamp such as "ST" is usually the barrel filer's signature. They'll often have a period between the letters (such as "H.L"), but not always. BIW & Co doesn't ring any bells. I'll see what I can find.

If I wasn't sure about what I was buying I'd post some pictures before I forked out a thousand bucks or more.

Before I commit, I'll have the gun inspected by Alfred Gallifent. The dealer has already agreed to that inspection.

If Alfred blesses it, I'd be more than comfortable that I'd gotten my money's worth.

Yeah, pictures on the internet are pretty worthless as an aid to being "sure" about what you're buying. You have the right idea.

With respect to "BIW&Co", my first thought was the maker of the tubes but, since the mark is also on the table, that isn't it. I can't come up with a company name that fits it.

One thought I had was that this piece might have been retailed by a hardware store ("ironmonger" in the UK), a practice as common there in those days as it was here, and that the mark is theirs. In that case, "BIW&Co" might suggest - "B-something Iron Works & Co". I dunno. Beyond that, I'm drawing a blank. Sorry I can't be of more help.

400 Nitro Express:

Good info. What about Birmingham for the "B"? Was there a Birmingham Iron Works & Company?

Possibly not Birmingham, but how about Britannia Iron Works? Most of the time if they made/peddled bicycles & sewing machines, they also were involved with guns(nothing definite just yet) - a little history:
http://www.nelmes.fsnet.co.uk/paxman/paxbrit.htm

Or along/near the Birmingham canal, which allowed commerce, was a Bradley furnace & ironworks which had been making steel for sometime using Darby's discovery. And a link for that info at: http://www.bcn-society.co.uk/bp167_rayshill.php which may have been a source for tube material early on.

And there was Bersham Ironworks which was destroyed by Wilkerson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bersham_Ironworks who ran the Bradley ironworks.

Kind Regards,

Can anyone confirm or deny that Bowling Iron Works(est. circa 1778) of Bradford("192 miles from London, 35 n.e. from Manchester, the like distance s.w. from the city of York, 14 n. from Huddersfield, 10 w. from Leeds, and 8 n. by e. from Halifax") furnished tube steel to any of the makers. If they were a souce of steel, then the "BIW&Co." could be Bowling Iron Works. I was also curious if anyone had "Histories of Bolton & Bowling", Thomas Brear, 1891 by William Cudworth: http://www.antiqbook.co.uk/boox/isl/3919.shtml or http://www.yorkshirecdbooks.com/Descriptions/BoltonBowlinHorton.html . The books a might bit more than the CD.
