I`ve cleaned up my vintage double and it`s looking pretty good. The metal now has a nice gray color. The stock and forearm are a different matter. The Acetone method worked like a charm. The forearm is a lot darker than the stock. Apparently not from the same blank. I`ve tried using some special walnut minwax to get it closer to the forearm but it`s not working out too good. I was wanting to try my hand at rust bluing and was hoping to get some insight from all you pros. Is it a pain staking process or an easy one. I could send it off and have it done but would like the satisfaction of doing it myself. I`ve used the Perma Blue before and had good resoults. Any help would be great and thanks in advance.

burch, PM me your e-mail address and I'll pass along Mike Orlen's excellent article on rust blueing. Rust blueing is a major pain IMO, but it's also about $250+ for set of barrels when you 'send out'.

Try a spirit stain instead of the oil stains - old hardwood seems to laugh at oil based stains. Brownells sells a few flavors of spirit stains, I like the ones from R Gale Lock Co.
