Daryl: I believe your example is more precisely "Bouquet & Scroll"; the early Parker Pigeon Guns engraved by Henry Gough were classic Rose and Scroll. There's a chapter in my new book about this, and it's interesting to note that engravers at James Purdey's did not "invent" the pattern. It goes back to the early days of the Koran when the religon dictated that no animal life could be depicted, thus the emphasis on vines and flowers and geometric patterns. The more liberalized Muslim interpetation of late--under penalty of death--is that only Mohammed is not to be pictured, especially in Danish cartoons.
