Yeti - I have a couple of guns from my Father that have little value other than sentiment, with little space at present in my cabinet. I've put them in Bore-store socks in a closet for the time being. At some point, I'll fashion another cabinet for them, but was curious about effects of a year's storage in these padded socks. Thank you -- each -- for the replies. Will

If guns are clean and dry with some CLP or similar product on metal surfaces, storing outside of a vault can be fine. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Napier VP90, some form of desiccant, and a certain amount of airflow if in a humid area. From my experience, this sort of formula can work for years with guns kept in cases.

The old bit about the oil running into the stock just has to be an urban myth. How the hell much oil do you use on a gun anyway? Besides, who uses oil? Spray stuff dosen't run, at least when applied in any sensible amount and then wiped off as almost all of us do.
Another one I'm about done with is the old saw about how grease on a hingepin somehow attracts dirt... like oil in the same place won't.

I use a Bore Runner to clean my bores and it wipes nearly all the oil out and leaves only a thin film. My opinion is that the classic oil soaking we see on guns is primarily from over oiling both reciever and bores. Oh, and I store muzzles up and never see any oil puddled on the breachface....hmm.

I'm thinking about turning mine every few hours.
