I have an old German sxs manufactured between 1913 and 1923. There is a slight looseness when held at the wrist and receiver and shaken with the chambers empty. However, if I put either snap caps or spent shells in the chambers the looseness is completely eliminated. With empty chambers there is no light visible between the breech and face. However, with snap caps in the chambers light is visible. I measured the breech to face gap with snap caps in the chambers and found it to be in the .004 -.005" range.

Would this be considered loose, off-face, etc?

loose and off face it is. Do your check to see if its tight when empty, with the fore-end removed.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.

I did the check both with and without the forend. I could not tell any difference......loose when empty, tight with snap caps in the chambers.

Restrict your shooting to very seldom and only with light loads at low pressure until you get it fixed. Select a "fix" from the "tool box" of suggested methods of the recent thread on this subject.

This thread gives rather complete coverage of available ways to make repair, some cheap and very temporary, some quite expensive and long lasting.

Gents,

Thanks for all the feedback. I am thinking about the beer can "fix". On my way out to pick up a six pack now. :-)
I did try electrical tape on the hook last night. The gun was difficult to close fully and the top lever wouldn't snap home. One thing that wasn't clear from the above mentioned thread; should the shim go on the hook or the pin?

either, but I find it easier to attach to the hook. If useing stainless shim about the only thing that works is Loctites blackmax from Brownells. I clean with acatone first, then glue in and hold the shim in place with a plastic felt marker and a c clamp. The plastic marker will expand to fill the hook. Paul

Paul,

Neat idea with the marker. I checked the local hardware and hobby shop....no luck with shim stock. I'd prefer something other than "beer can" but I think that's what I'll start with. I don't shoot it all that often; only at the Lapeer SxS shoot. :-)

Phil, Try the local automotive parts house for a cheapo feeler gauge, has every size you'll need. HTH Bob
