I bought a Model 21 about five years ago that was in great mechanical condition but had been used a lot. I use it for hunting all the time. Not only does it shoot well, but I just love to see people's faces when I tell them my beater is a 21. But my nice guns- I keep in the safe. If you use them for hunting, they are going to get torn up. You might as well face it before you take them out. But, I hope you are OK from your fall. Good luck.

An old Fen slodger for sure j0ey! Why I can almost picture that olden gun, in a leaky punt stuffed full with fowl of all sorts going off to market. Nice!

If I were to invest in something to look at I'd buy paintings or sculptures.
Guns, whatever their lineage, were made to shoot. That is, as Aristotle would say, their essence, what makes them what they are.
I also believe you are honoring the people that made them by using them.

Chris:
Actually, it was a pretty lousy day. Started raining when I was about a mile from the truck. By the time I got back, I had a ten pound ball of mud on each boot. Saw only 5 birds, four of which would have required a full choke punt gun and the 5th was one who just wouldn't fly. Two chances for a ground swat - in hindsight, he deserved it!
By the way, congratulations on you new "CF" Lefever!!!!

1911 Hunter Arms LC Smith OOE 16g 30" 6 1/2 #s with chokes opened to .006 and .014. I suspect an old restock for the wood to be this nice. http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1373/6511424/12588446/199424054.jpgNot a 'best gun' in any way but my best and sure proud of her.

I purchased my Win Model 21 'Duck' 32" from a guy that just could not bear to take it into a blind with him. My fortune, his misfortune. We have had a lot of rain in SE Wisconsin and the fields are very soft to the point where I can't even drive my Volvo XC without a chance of getting stuck. On the other hand we have some nice pot holes. Yesterday was 44F, light rain/mist and low ceiling. My son and I did switch to 870 pumps because we knew everything was going to be wet and muddy. The switch was not to avoid cosmetic damage but just to avoid cleaning and relubing doubles. There are sometimes that a good 870 excels!-Dick
