Thanks for all the feedback. I am thinking about the beer can "fix". On my way out to pick up a six pack now. :-)
I did try electrical tape on the hook last night. The gun was difficult to close fully and the top lever wouldn't snap home. One thing that wasn't clear from the above mentioned thread; should the shim go on the hook or the pin?
