Good evening all,
My name is Andy and I am new to double guns (or any shotguns for that matter). I have been eyeing a couples of shotguns (hamerless and hammer) from Thad's and will initiate a purchase soon. Firstly, I am looking for a competent double gunsmith/FFL dealer in the Washington D.C/Northern Virginia area who can exam the guns for me. Please let me know if you have a favorite gunsmith that can examine damascus barrels in this area. Secondly, I am soliciting your advice on questions to ask Thad regarding hammer guns before I spend the money for inspections. Thank you all in advance for all your help. Andy

The list is just short of infinite. What are you going hunt/shoot with the doubles? Tube length, type, choke, chamber lenghts are just a start. Stock length of pull, grip, dims. of drop at comb & heel-these are dimensions that fit you. Next, I guess would be Country of origin and type of locks(back-action, bar in wood, rebounding, nonrebounding). An idea of what you intend to use it for would help.

Kind Regards,

Raimey

They are T. Wild composed pair top lever hammer nitro 12ga SxS, SPG stocks are 14 1/4 x 1 1/2 x 1 3/4, 28" SK & M, 28" SK & F, DT, scroll engraved, 6 1/2lbs, cased, excellent....$3,495. My intent for these guns are to shoot sporting clays and occasional upland hunting, and for starting a gun collection. Does the price seems fair to you?. Andy

Does the composed pair, not matched, have 65mm chambers?

I'm not Wild about Thomas Wild guns. Those are some very plain guns....I guess for both of them with the case it's not a bad price, if that's what you are looking for. I look at the case as useless.

The Churchill he has listed looks like it might be a nice gun...the pictures are so bad it's hard to tell very much about it.

Whether a T. Wild case or not, I consider a case, along with a hard or soft Leg O' Mutton, about as important as the forend. On the vintage cases there's always the intoxicating smell of burnt powder, leather & gun oil. Maybe someone should make a cologne??

One looks to have rebounding hammers and I would venture to guess that the chambers are 65mm. A pic of the barrel flats would provide much info.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the advice. It seems that I have lots to learn from you guys/gals. I thought T. Wild was a "best" gunmaker and that composed pair was a pair of guns that was made accompanying each other. I may have been confused on both accounts. I also thought that a cased pair is desireable as well. I guess I am going to hold off purchasing a gun and hang around here for a while longer to get a little smater :-). Andy

Andy:

If you are new to doubles, and there are guys here with decades of experience over me, I wouldn't cut my teeth on a composed pair of hammerguns. I prefer them but most folk I shoot with can't fanthom why I'd bring a short chambered hammergun afield. Your quest for a "best" gunmaker will futher have to be defined as to which proof house the longarm went thru which will spark even more debate.

Kind Regards,

Raimey
