Just found these. Go here St. Etienne
and scroll down.

You'll find:
-Manufacture francaise d'Armes , Tarif no. 21, St-Etienne, 1890.
-Manufacture francaise d'Armes , St-Etienne, 1895.
-Manufacture francaise d'Armes , Tarif-Album general no. 58, St-Etienne, 1900.
-Manufacture francaise d'armes et cycles, Saint-Etienne, 1905
-Manufacture Francaise d'Armes et Cycles, Tarif-Album, St-Etienne, 1910.

Just took a butcher at some pages of the 1890 catalogue, where apart from prices (page 72, I think) there are complete take down instructions for the Ideal.

From what I read, there was quite an uproar when the first Ideals came out and they were subjected to all sorts of sabotage and slander by the competition. Great reading.

JC
P.S.: Had to eliminate all accents and special signs as they were not showing properly.
P.P.S.: PeteM thanks for finding the direct link. jc

Mon Dieu ! Quel trésor.

This has to be the 1st picture I have seen of a production center for making barrels from 1890. Incredible...

This has as much detail as Puraye's "Le Damas" about the steps to produce damascus.

Jaycee what an incredible find, thank you very much. The 1895 catalog has pictures of velcipede production. Plus a complete comic strip on hunting and dog training. The 1900 catalog has actual photos of the factory. Also a long study on smokeless powders, penetration tests...

I thought you guys would appreciate them.

Frustratingly enough I am not able to see them on my Mac; I only get gibberish.
Have to borrow my wife's Windows based laptop, but she is using it for now.

I did see (page 10 of the 1890 Catalogue I think) the testing that was done to the barrels -powder and shot charges- interesting sizes of both to say the least.

The catalogues belong to the St. Etienne library, from what I could see.

The "testing" of the 3 types is funny. A real salesman piece to show how great Manufrance Damas Eclair really is. Great looking pattern to it.

I found a 1884 Manufrance catalog for sale on line. No luck on a 1890. I would hope they kept most of the filler material constant for a few years.

Of all the damascus documentation I have read, no one mentions this catalog? Very surprising as it is a primary source. I wish that graphic of barrel makers forge had more information. I would like to know how the tasks were broken out.

Quality find, JayCee:

Posts like this coupled with "Damascus Explained" & the Meriden thread will be good reading at my mother-in-law's this week, as I have fallen behind in the Damascus topic.

Kind Regards,

Raimey
