Kroil is a commercial penetrating oil, I have suspected it a blend of Kerosene & oil, hence the name. Very good stuff to have around, order a gallon direct for the best price.

Kroil is a penetrating oil sold by Brownells or you can buy direct from Kano Labs. Best stuff I ever ran into for loosening rusted screws.

I had heard of the engine oil (used, out of an engine with a lot of hours on it) from an engraver. I have a trigger guard which needs some work, so I'll try the Kroil oil first. The two solutions were to "lighten in color" the Case Hardnening to show the engraving better. It would remove all the metal evenly. I was hoping to get a comment on this from some who has tried the process.

Captain ---- first degrease all metal & remove any lac. coating. Next, heavily coat color case surface with Lysol toilet bowl cleaner (the thick type) and allow to set for about a half hour. Now you scrub the surface with 000 or 0000 steel wool to loosen the carbon particles that create the colors. Repeat this process until the action is free of color.

I next boil the action in water to remove all residue and place it into a can of filthy crabk case oil from diesel engine. Allow this to set for a few days or until metal takes on the gray color you are looking for. Ken

I tried some Navel Jelly this morning with a synthetic
steel wool. It did a nice job,and did not harm the engraving
at all. I'll try it again tomorrow.

LD1 ---- be very careful with naval jelly as it sometimes will remove color unevenly & etch the steel deeper in some places. If you are still going to use it, please make sure it is well stired before using. FWIW, Ken

Thanks Ken. I hope your Christmas was a great one. We got our first granddaughter so we did not open presents, just rushed off to the hospital in Portland. There is a lot of snow in the coastal mountains and on the beach.
