The early Gaels were similarly refined, but then it must be remembered that we sent the Icelanders manners long befor 930 AD in the shape of St. Brendan the Navigator, the Kerryman with the leather currach. The Gaels elected their tribal chiefs/kings and deputies – the heir apparent is Tánaiste, by which name our deputy PM is still known. That system lasted up to Henry VIII who introduced c1540 surrender and re-grant, after which time the system of primogeniture became common in Ireland, not at all democratic.
