Nial, I grew up with parents who reminded us every week of the curse of opium and then a result of the mores of a Baptist fishing village I rebelled into alcohol for 40 years. Now, I'm pure as the driven snow and wish you were here by the fire with me so I could watch you savour a big jug of Scapa, gift from a friend in Guernsey.

King Brown, thanks so much for your implied invitation. Unfortunately if I was there I'd have to stay bloody close to the fire. I have a horror of cold climates. I grew up in the poverty stricken Ireland of the forties and never had enough clothes to keep warm. My bed cover was an old army greatcoat but I could hardly wear my bedding during the day. Even now when I'm in my cottage there I keep the heat cranked up to unbearable levels for the locals. I'll have to content myself with looking at Nova Scotia from 6 miles up in the heated cabin of a plane. Still, as my sister says, "there's aatin an' drinkin" in a fire. Enjoy your's.

Jay H Cee Nial, You’ll have me snifflin’ in my Paddy soon! The big freeze of ’47, (before my time BTW.) Those greatcoats took on a lustre of their own with age.
King, have a look at http://www.althingi.is/kynningarefni/index_en.html and go to “Timeline”

The early Gaels were similarly refined, but then it must be remembered that we sent the Icelanders manners long befor 930 AD in the shape of St. Brendan the Navigator, the Kerryman with the leather currach. The Gaels elected their tribal chiefs/kings and deputies – the heir apparent is Tánaiste, by which name our deputy PM is still known. That system lasted up to Henry VIII who introduced c1540 surrender and re-grant, after which time the system of primogeniture became common in Ireland, not at all democratic.

Going to bed, up early in the morning to enjoy a day’s shooting.

there is no way to predict what will be next. Since the ban on possession of a brain within the confines of the UK was passed there has been no indication of rationality. And that was sometime early in the 20th Century as we all know. There was of course an earlier informal ban that was generally recognized but the real action, or inaction as it were, has been since the formal ban.

Britain has a higher level of crime than us mixed colonialists here in the wilds of America. Their crime has doubled in the last 7 years and ours is dropping as rights to carry have almost become universal (something like 43 states) and home (castle)protection rights become more popular. Socialists of the world...die. Freedom will follow.

Enoch Powell was down right prophetic.

King,
From BBC, not the NRA:

"Old stereotypes die hard and the vision of Britain as a peaceable kingdom, America as "the wild west culture on the other side of the Atlantic" is out of date. It is true that in contrast to Britain's tight gun restrictions, half of American households have firearms, and 33 states now permit law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons.

But despite, or because, of this, violent crime in America has been plummeting for 10 consecutive years, even as British violence has been rising. By 1995 English rates of violent crime were already far higher than America's for every major violent crime except murder and rape.

You are now six times more likely to be mugged in London than New York. Why? Because as common law appreciated, not only does an armed individual have the ability to protect himself or herself but criminals are less likely to attack them. They help keep the peace. A study found American burglars fear armed home-owners more than the police. As a result burglaries are much rarer and only 13% occur when people are at home, in contrast to 53% in England.

Much is made of the higher American rate for murder. That is true and has been for some time. But as the Office of Health Economics in London found, not weapons availability, but "particular cultural factors" are to blame.

A study comparing New York and London over 200 years found the New York homicide rate consistently five times the London rate, although for most of that period residents of both cities had unrestricted access to firearms.

When guns were available in England they were seldom used in crime. A government study for 1890-1892 found an average of one handgun homicide a year in a population of 30 million. But murder rates for both countries are now changing. In 1981 the American rate was 8.7 times the English rate, in 1995 it was 5.7 times the English rate, and by last year it was 3.5 times. With American rates described as "in startling free-fall" and British rates as of October 2002 the highest for 100 years the two are on a path to converge.

The price of British government insistence upon a monopoly of force comes at a high social cost.

First, it is unrealistic. No police force, however large, can protect everyone. Further, hundreds of thousands of police hours are spent monitoring firearms restrictions, rather than patrolling the streets. And changes in the law of self-defence have left ordinary people at the mercy of thugs."

Would "particular cultural factors," be the same as my "melting pot over flowing into the streets."
By jove! I think it is.
