I don't think for a minute today's generation, in America, is tougher than the old days. I'm not so much worried about trained soldiers but rather the everyday 20 or even 40 year old. In fact, your reference to the military shows just the problem - everyone needs some toughness, not just the people we hire to be tough for us.

Every year, fewer Americans know how to handle a gun, drive tractor, change a spark plug, use a slide rule, or even drive without a seatbelt.

I see England and I fear that's what we will become. As we get softer, there are plenty of other countries getting tougher.
