The only indication is the closeness of the acquisition date and the date of sale. Most of the Francottes were sold weeks or months, sometimes years, after they were placed in inventory. Even the Eagle grades did not seem to be sold when they arrived. On the other hand, makes such as Purdey, H&H, Woodward and Boss often went out the same day they arrived or within a few days of being logged in, including a Purdey to E.F. Hutton.

What a beautiful gun.
Where did you get it and have you ever shot it?
What is the initial before 'SM' on the trigger guard?
How long are the bbls?
Be nice if we could see some pics of bbl flats, butt end of stock, open action, anything stamped on top of bbls, etc.

My hunch is it's a "Best" gun and may be valued above $8000.00
I haven't seen many Francotte's nicer than that. Oh I have, but not many. I've seen many a knotch below that more like 5-8K guns.
But that just looks extra fine to me. Absolutley gorgeous and the wood to netal fit is awesome. Please let me know what you find out. I will try and get some time to help.

Be still my heart!! That is one beautiful gun. If you get a chance have a look inside. They are as pretty inside as out. I have 3 VL&D Boxlock Damascus guns. They are almost always my go to guns for the field. Light, quick handling and a delightful action. I do love photos like these!!

I am looking at a repro catalog of Francottes from the 1930 era. The pictures above are similar to several in the catalog. Francotte assigned "qualite'" numbers to their guns and the above gun is similar to the 140 series which is/was their best guns.. As to value, I saw a 120 series offered for sale a few years ago for over $10,000. If the gun is a 140 series gun it would be much more valuable. I'm sure there are more knowledgeable Francotte owners out there that can give a better estimate, but I would say well over $10,000, maybe double that if it is truly a "best" gun of the 140 series.

Aziz, For comparison, here is another very nice Francotte SLE, made in 1959. This gun was offered for sale earlier this year for $9500 by a well known dealer.

Aziz, those prices are from the final days of Francotte's existence - note the date at the bottom of the web page you reference is '10/11/96'. The company was near death several times between 1959 and 1989; looks like this time it's for good, though.

BTW, if it were anything other than a 12 ga, it would be even more valuable.
