I have a busy, but unwanted beaver damming an area that could cause my road to flood over.
Whats the best way to get rid of this little devil?

Lowell, the only thing I know to do is shoot it. In my opinion the traps used to kill beaver can be unnecessarily cruel and I don't know of any method to live trap them.

The typical beaver traps usually kill them very quickly. THe problem with eradicating beavers is that they learn very quickly. I would get some one in there hwo traps a lot of beaver each year and have him get as many as he can. Any that become trap shy would then be shot. I advise getting in a tree stand in full camo, and not moving at all. It has always amazed me how quickly thiose things learn what is dangerous-man with gun, trap, whatever.

I have seen live traps for beaver on TV. I am sure you could find them on the net, but I see no need. Beavers are swimming rats, as I usually call them.

I the past I did a lot of beaver damage control trapping and shooting. Beavers are just like everything else in the animal world-deer, wolves, geese, whatever. THey look so cute on TV, but when you are overrun by them in your own yard, their cuteness quickly evaporates!

Have been in exactly this situation. I've used a .22, but not much of the animal is exposed when they're swimming. And they quickly learn to become nocturnal. Another approach - for the less patient - is to create a hole in their dam, and use a 12 ga and #2s or the smaller buckshot when they come to effect repairs.

You can live trap them if you wish. A quick call to your local game warden/conservation officer or whatever will give you advice and legalities.

There should be some local fur trappers in the area that would be willing to help out at this time of year too.

Properly set traps are quick and humane. I'd contact my local game warden and explain the situation to him and he'll tell you what your options are. If trapping is a method that is legal he"ll be able to give you the name of some reliable local trappers. If you can shoot them, they make mighty fine eating. Anyway good luck in your beaver eradication.
