M D et al:
This could be a case much like Carl Stiegele in Germany.
He was a master gun maker for a time and was the gun make for the King of Bavaria. Built some wonderful guns.
He evolved into a store that sold others guns and sporting goods for Africa bound hunters.
His firm has now evolved into a safari outfitting concern.
From what has been posted, I think this might be our answer to the Maele question.
Best,
John

I'd be interested in any info as well-I also have a Jean Van Maele boxlock 12g, 2 3/4 chambered and originally nitro proofed. Proof marks date it at some time between 1910 and 1923 if I remember correctly.

It's a very well used gun, most of the chequering has gone and someone has either painted or stove enamelled the barrels black some time in the fairly recent (last 10?) years.

Jean Van Maele Arquebusier de S.M. Le Roi de Serbie, 16 rue Grétry ŕ Bruxelles - founded in 1866

Looks like he was more of a firearms merchant that maker?
