A few guys at Port of Minneapolis were of the belief that it was up to them to stop every legal importation from Europe. Even my BATF guy said they were short on social skills.

Not in the habit of picking up your spent ammunition, would be my guess.

Earth seems to be taking it in stride.

I cross the border pretty regularly in Port Huron, and then in Niagara Falls.

There is an answer to the change in query, and it has to do with administrative changes.

My best recommendation would be that the next time you are at the border ask them how come they are doing the lengthier interrogations.

They will tell you.

It is a pretty common question for them.

The current political climate and friction resulting from Canada's unwillingness to engage in fair trade with the U.S. has nothing to do with this. Canadian Customs has a long history of subjecting U.S. citizens to harassment, questioning, and secondary searches if they suspect you are a gun owner. Having an NRA hat, decal, or bumper sticker will often trigger intense scrutiny, as will the presence of hunting gear, camouflage hats, ammo boxes, or anything suggesting you are a gun owner.

It isn't at all surprising to hear the OP witnessed this behavior. It probably isn't universal among all Canadian Border Agents, but it's nothing new. Simply being uncooperative probably wouldn't make the situation any better. I guess you have to decide how important it is to visit Canada.

There shouldn't be any real problem if you fill out the Non-Resident Firearms Declaration Form, give it to the Officer immediately, and declare everything legally. But the TDS folks who wish to blame Trump for everything and anything will not hesitate to blame Trump for Canada's long anti-gun history... brought to Canadians and U.S. Citizens alike by the anti-gun Liberal Left. Sadly, we can't vote against anti-gun Canada politicians, but some of us use our brains and vote against them here... because we are able to connect the dots.

I got standards. They ain’t much, but, they are mine.

I’ve crossed the border countless times. On the whole, agents on both sides are humourless. Not surprising, given Trump’s aggressive distaste for all things Canadian, that the “elbows up” stupidity has spread from low information Canadian voters to low information Canadian border agents. Justified or not, the antagonism eventual will get results.

Depending on where you cross, border agents know they get a good number of American travellers who are stunned to find out that when in a different country, American laws no longer apply. Go figure. 🤣

BTW, for most of you who rarely cross by land, you don’t interact with the border agents from the country you are LEAVING unless you make a point of stopping at their offices and going in. When I leave the US at Port Huron it is essentially an interstate hwy that leads onto a bridge. At the far side the bridge is Canada Customs. It’s the same in reverse.

This is not new. Son crossed into Canada heading to Alaska with the maritime seaway shut down and with kayaks on roof of truck during the heart of Covid in June 2020. The BC Canadian border guards questioned him in the same way - "do you have guns? Do you have guns at home?" (and then gave him 36 hours to drive from the Canadian border to Alaska - grueling).

However, the BC/Washington State border has been contentious since the attempted space-needle bombing 30 years ago; Canada let in virtually the entire Milan, Italy mosque after it was raided in 1995. It had been supporting the Islamic battalion fighting in Bosnia and the information from the Italian raid was one of the first indications of the extent of the spread of extremism - fighters going from Afghanistan, to Chechnya, then to Bosnia - with spill overs into Jordan (and of course by this time Bin Ladin was in Khartoum - still a virtual unknown). Vancouver subsequently became known as "Milan West."

However, 5 months later returning from Alaska crossing into Yukon, with his 870 in the truck this time, he spoke French to the border guard, told them about the Remington and was just waved through.

So it looks like it's location specific.
