Raimey, I've no idea. Most of Reifs here are postwar, and I seem to remember that when a pre-war showed up, someone suggested Reif was deliperately marking some of his new guns as prewar, since after a while the customers caught up with the fact that prewar quality was better. But this is just speculation.

Dave, that would be mother-of-pearl. There is a persistent idea in this country that a high-end shotgun must look like a Fabergier egg with two barrels. However, most of these guns are made as gifts and seldom get to be fired.

An alternative opinion on Reifs is that his guns were in quality just like any other postwar East German makers, and the only differentiating feature is the overboard styling.
The one on pics looks pretty well-made.

»Bei der vorliegenden Flinte handelt es sich um ein waffenhistorisch hoch interessantes Stück mit vielen Verbindungen zu anderen Suhler Jagdwaffenherstellern. Otto Reif wurde am 15. April 1884 in Suhl geboren. Sein Vater arbeitet bis 1895 auch bei einem Waffenhersteller und seine Mutter entstammte der bekannten Firma Kerner. Otto begann 1898 eine Lehre als Systemmacher (Schloßmacher) bei der bekannten Firma Simson in Suhl. Zwischendurch absolvierte er seinen Militärdienst und besuchte eine technische Schule in Frankfurt am, Main. Als 1911 die Produktion eines geeigneten PKWs begann, meldete sich Otto Reif zur Fahrzeugproduktion der Firma Simson. Er machte den Führerschein, erhielt die Fahrlehrerlizenz und führte Testfahrten in den Thüringer Bergen durch. Mit Ausbruch des Krieges wurde er Waffenmeister des 71. Infanterieregiments aber auch schon bald wieder nach Suhl zurück versetzt, um weiter in der Rüstungsproduktion zu arbeiten. 1917 erhielt er für besondere Leistungen in der Waffenfertigung einen kaiserlichen Orden.

Nach Kriegsende investierte die Familie Simson die enormen Gewinne aus der Rüstungsproduktion vor allem in die Fahrzeugproduktion. Ab 1921 versuchte er sich auch als Rennfahrer. 1924 wurde Simsons neues Auto 'Supra' vorgestellt und von Otto Reif als Rennwagen genutzt. Er gewann damit 32 Rennen und wurde der erste große Rennfahrer Deutschlands und der Leiter der Rennabteilung von Simson. Unter anderem mit den errungenen Preisgeldern eröffnete er 1926 eine eigene Firma in Suhl, welche Fahrzeuge und Waffen handelte.1928 starb sein Sohn als Motorradrennfahrer. Dieser Schicksalsschlag und die wirtschaftlichen Probleme der Zeit führten zur Insolvenz des eigenen Betriebes. Von 1939 bis 1945 scheint Reif als Geschäftsführer der Firma Heym auf. Mit Kriegsende und der Flucht der Familie Heym in den Westen übernahm Reif Teile der Firmengebäude und gründete sein eigenes Unternehmen, die "Otto Reif Metallwarenfabrik Suhl". Sicher aufgrund seiner Vorkriegsanstellung bestand ein Naheverhältnis zur Firma Simson & Co. in Suhl (die Basküle der vorliegenden Doppelflinte weisen auch Firmenmarken der Fa. Simson auf.) Vermutlich wurden von dort viele weißfertige Flinten bezogen und dann in der eigenen Firma ausgefertigt. Zusätzlich wurde er von den neuen Machthabern als Geschäftsführer der Firma Sauer & Sohn ernannt. Der Nummernblock der vorliegenden Flinte läßt sich der Firma Sauer & Sohn zuordnen. Ab 1950intensivierte die DDR die Bemühungen alle privaten Firmen zu verstaatlichen und so wurde auch der Druck auf Otto Reif immer größer. Angeblich wurde er beim Bau und Verkauf einer Doppelflinte mit Wechsellauf für Josef Stalin so betrogen, daß in keiner anderen Wahl blieb, als die Firma mit ihren 60 Mitarbeitern aufzugeben. Im September 1950 übersiedelte er mit einigen Mitarbeitern und Maschinen nach West-Berlin und fand in der RICA-Werk GmbH eine neue Erwerbsmöglichkeit. Seine ausgezeichneten Kontakte nach Suhl (vor allem zum VEB Fortuna-Werk Suhl - ehemals Sauer & Sohn) halfen ihm beim Verkauf der Waffen im Westen. Am 08. April 1951 starb Otto Reif in West-Berlin an einem Schlaganfall.«

Some info on Reif, but Dietrich Apel always told me Otto Refi was considered to be a lower rung Used Car Salesman, a rapscallion, & due to his unscrupulous acts, he was tared & feathered and then run out on a rail from Suhl.

„The shotgun in question is a piece of great historical interest, with numerous connections to other Suhl-based sporting gun manufacturers. Otto Reif was born in Suhl on April 15, 1884. His father also worked for a gun manufacturer until 1895, and his mother came from the renowned Kerner family firm. In 1898, Otto began an apprenticeship as an action maker (lock maker) at the famous Simson company in Suhl. In the interim, he completed his military service and attended a technical school in Frankfurt am Main. When production of a suitable passenger car began in 1911, Otto Reif transferred to Simson’s vehicle production division. He obtained his driver's license and an instructor's license, and conducted test drives in the Thuringian mountains. Upon the outbreak of the war, he became an armorer for the 71st Infantry Regiment but was soon transferred back to Suhl to continue working in arms production. In 1917, he received an Imperial decoration for outstanding achievements in weapons manufacturing.

In 1924, Simson’s new "Supra" car was unveiled, and Otto Reif drove it in races. This personal tragedy, combined with the economic difficulties of the era, led to the bankruptcy of his own business. From 1939 to 1945, Reif is recorded as the managing director of the Heym company. Following the end of the war and the Heym family's flight to the West, Reif took over parts of the Heym factory premises and established his own company, "Otto Reif Metallwarenfabrik Suhl." Undoubtedly due to his pre-war employment, he maintained a close relationship with the Suhl-based firm Simson & Co. (the action of the double-barreled shotgun in question bears Simson company markings). It is likely that many shotguns were sourced from there in the "white-finished" state—fully machined but unpolished and unengraved—and subsequently completed at his own facility. Additionally, the new authorities appointed him managing director of the Sauer & Sohn company; the serial number range of the shotgun in question can be traced to Sauer & Sohn. From 1950 onwards, the GDR intensified its efforts to nationalize all private enterprises, placing Otto Reif under increasing pressure. He was reportedly defrauded so severely during the construction and sale of a double-barreled shotgun with interchangeable barrels intended for Joseph Stalin that he was left with no choice but to abandon the company and its 60 employees. In September 1950, he relocated to West Berlin with a number of employees and machines, finding a new business opportunity with RICA-Werk GmbH. His excellent contacts in Suhl—particularly with VEB Fortuna-Werk Suhl (formerly Sauer & Sohn)—aided him in selling the firearms in the West. Otto Reif died of a stroke in West Berlin on April 8, 1951.“

I just do not see him listed as a »Büchsenmachermeister« but rather as a Inhaber or Owner. He had his shop @ Römer-Werk and did somehow acquire Wilhelm Heym concern.

I personally think the above reference paints Otto Reif in too bright of a light.

Some sources suggest, and I for one would say they are credible, give that Suspect Used Car Dealer Otto Reif collapsed amid fraud, forgery, embezzlement as well as receivership, bankruptcy proceedings that resulted for »3 Hots & a Cot« for ole Otto Reif for 24 months. I guess he honed his gunmaker skills whilst behind bars?
