Zerfahrenheit unserer Munition - 1908
Wolfgang devised a summary doc with a few points on the lack of standardization and fate of similar cartridges that fell out of favour. .....
Maybe Gutsbesitzer Ungewitter was driving the Neumannswalde Cartridge Standardization Wagon????
Hochachtungsvoll,
Raimey rse Raimey, this is interesting and one would like to see a copy of the article. One of the driving forces behind the standardization efforts was Albert (not Paul, not Alfred) Preuss, who was the head of the Versuchsstation Neumannswalde (and who was part of the 1912 Olympic Trap team). Already in 1900 he wrote an article in "Das Schiesswesen", titled "Kalibersorgen", elaborating on points 1, 2 and 4 as detailed above. fuhrmann PS. I found this article in Schuss und Waffe, no. 17, p. 410. It is signed "Die Versuchsstation". What is your reason to assume that Herr Ungewitter participated in this article?

Fuhrmann:
I really am in the preliminary stages of this sorting thru data using the >>Latest & Greatest<< platforms, so I am sort of fishing too....
Regarding Gutsbesitzer Ungewitter, that really wasn't even an assumption, just a postulate or sorts seeing he was in around the folks you mentioned & the facility. What I didn't mean to do is assert that he was a contributing author. Just a possible influencer in the move towards standardization.

“Gutsbesitzer Ungewitter“/ A.Ungewitter / Alfred Ungewitter was wealthy & large landowner, who with his status, found his way into offering empirical solutions to hunting & weapons issues of the era. His land holdings were under Gut Roßdorf near Jessnitz in Anhalt. In all of the publications related to his contributions, he is always referred to or defined as Gutsbesitzer. His contemporaries were Albrecht Kind, Georg Luger along with agents from RWS & Köln-Rottweiler. Maybe that is why Rottweiler powder was so popular?
He was a Guest Author in »Schuss & Waffe« and it seems his artikels were edited by Albert Preuß. He was considered one of the experts of the time and had a dedicated chair @ the First Ballistiker-Kongress at the Neumannswalde Testing Station orchestrated by Albert Preuß.
Gutsbesitzer Ungewitter was basically an Empirical Bridge between practical hunting & shooting and the quickly, ever evolving technology of propellants and ballistics.

Raimey,
Herr Ungewitter already gained lasting fame by somehow participating in the creation of the groundbreaking and hugely successful Bleistiftpatrone which is still discussed and reloaded today! Why trying to find / postulate further achievements? Actually the key participants in the initial normalisation effort are listed in "Schuss und Waffe" no 23 p. 472, "Die neuen Normalhülsen ....." No mention of any Gutsbesitzer. fuhrmann

Just a »Red Herring«, initiated by 7,35 Carcano, that I thought I would chase for a time. At the moment, I can't say what credible contribution Gutsbesitzer Ungewitter added to Normalization, but according to sources, he did have a seat @ the Neumannswalde Table.

Why trying to find / postulate further achievements? (...) No mention of any Gutsbesitzer. Google gives you several Grundakten, where he is correctly addressed as such. Now, the modest Gut Roßdorf must not be construed as something like Ostelbisches Junkerland, e.g. say Schloß Dohna, but the iron foundry there (Eisenhammer) may have been a foundation of Alfred's father or forefathers. When he was born however, small-scale iron manufacture was no longer lucrative. Whether the still existing Ungewitter Stiftung at the University of Göttingen (Faculty of Physics) has anything to do with his family, I leave open. My guess is a "yes". Regards, Carcano

Too, I don't know exactly, or approximately, the land holdings of Gutsbesitzer Ungewitter or whether he was a „Junkerland in Bauernhand“, but for some reason @ the time, such individuals seem to have >>Mystical Powers<<......
He was noted for some reason, fact or fallacy.

Gutsbesitzer Ungewitter was basically an Empirical Bridge between practical hunting & shooting and the quickly, ever evolving technology of propellants and ballistics. I happen to have "Das Schiesswesen" complete from 1895 to 1909. Also a Neumannswalde publication, predating "Schuss & Waffe". I have certainly not read everything there, it's a lot of paper, but never did I see the name Ungewitter there. Of course Albert Preuss, Konrad Eilers etc. Some contributors there liked to use initials or a pseudonym, eg "Jäger Unverdrossen" Ah, now here I have him: vol 5, pp. 33-35, a lengthy theoretical discussion on "Die geeignete Büchse für starkes Raubzeug", meaning large cats or bear. Signed: Gut Rossdorf bei Jessnitz, Anhalt Alfred Ungewitter
