Getting anxious for the up coming dove season and bought some surprising realistic decoys. Anyone have recommendations for any modern decoys? Maybe someone found some they prefer?

Ah, love dove shooting. I use a dove tree with a flapper and a couple of stationary doves attached. Usually gets their attention. So are those your two top dove guns? What are they may I ask.

I think this year I will take a hammer 16ga and one of the heavier 16ga hammerless each hunt and rotate.Pieper, Meffert and Guyot all 16s.

Dove decoys work amazingly well, at times. Then, for some reason, doves seem to totally ignore them. I use 'em. They're part of my "kit", both stationary and spinning wing ones. With the spinning wing dekes, the higher up you can position them the better off you will be.

Judas doves atop a center pivot irrigation system pipeline. Like a magnet and steel.

I use decoys for doves of several types.
Also shoot decoying pigeons. One thing I notice with the pigeons is that no decoy works as well as the real thing. The sooner I get my spread populated with dead birds, well positioned the better the result. I think it’s similar with doves.

The decoy shown above is lovely but I doubt it’s very effective. The shiny surface will show from great distance. Might need to cover it in dust.

A cheap plastic dove deke can be used very effectively if you are near a single, or three phase power line. Many of these dekes have an eyelet on top of the back for a string. Take a fishing reel and tie on the dove. Throw it over the BOTTOM line of a power line (on a single phase line there are two. Top one is hot but the bottom one is a neutral with no power. Same on a three phase line, but three top ones are hot and bottom is a neutral). Reel up all the slack until the deke is tight up against the bottom of the neutral line. Doves will light right beside it and don't seem bothered at all that their "buddy" is under the line that they're perched on top of. Of course, we wouldn't shoot one off the line, but rather as it approaches, or flies away. Trust me, the approach shot is easier than the departing one.

We have a place in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Lots of white wings, but very few mourning doves. I took some mojo decoys down a few years ago and the white wings had zero interest in them. Anyone else had that experience?

We generally hunt between the Salton Sea and southern Arizona, and the spinners work surprisingly well most of the time. We use Mojos, single vertical spinners, and the little flock-a-flickers that just sit on the ground. Some days they don't work at all, so we jump shoot in the desert. We've had a lot of weather the last few years so the whitewings have been mostly absent. Spinners don't work on Eurasions. Monsoons are coming, and they usually hit at the wrong time.

I could use a little monsoon right about now. It's dry as a popcorn fart here.

Cloud cover came in last night, bit of drizzle this morning, 90 degrees at noon. Supposed to get rain later in the week. Last year's dove opener was pretty much rained out for three days, too much lightning to be out there waving a steel wand around.

I just walk up doves, but use wind powered spinning wing dove decoys on sandbars for ducks. The spinners attract ducks to the floaters in the water. They are smaller and much cheaper than duck spinners, I hit a sale and bought four for $9./ea.

As far as gear goes, this chair has been the most comfortable and easiest to hop up to my shot that I have found. I bought 3 so my guests could also enjoy. Like 50.00

Nice looking chair. I prefer those with swivel seats for doves.

I found a new one in one of my harvested corn fields some years ago. Evidently someone had left it there after poaching on my field, so it changed possession. Sold by Cabela's as a "blind chair", it folds and has a swivel seat. Very comfortable and tall enough that I can get to my feet from it much quicker than one of those old swivel seat 5 gal. buckets.

I carved and painted these out of basswood over 15 years ago. The one with the turned head was easier to carve than the one with the beak. The metal loop snags the branch or line and sits on top. Later versions could dangle below the line and still work. Doves couldn't tell the difference. Gil

Mojo decoys bring in our AZ white wing's, morning and collared dove easy!
Hang a couple dead birds on a four strand barbed wire fence too.
