Doug was my best friend. We always talked 2-3x/week about everything and about nothing. He was 83, and if you are an adolescent 83 1/2. I can assure you his passing was without drama he just simply died. I cannot tell you how much I will miss him. Well beyond his incredible gifts as a stockmaker and brilliant, perfect checkering he was humble and kind. He had magic hands. I will miss him forever.
Antonio So sorry for your loss. He is a great loss to our passionate hobby as well.

Didn’t know him at all and only read his comments on the website which always appeared so knowledgeable and intelligent. Was an addition to the board. So, I am sad to hear this. Sorry if he was your friend. He will be missed. 😔

Never got to meet him but this is the kind of guy he was. I have a Steve Earle Frasher action that needs stocking and could not find a pattern to begin the project so reached out to Doug as I knew he had stocked a couple of them. He did not have a pattern but graciously offered to take the stock off of his personal gun and allow it to be used as a pattern. I was stunned to say the least and took him up on it. He sent the stock to Gene Smillion and I sent my wood and a couple of weeks later I had a roughed stock to work with. I thanked him, covered all shipping and insurance costs and sent him a check for his time that he never cashed. A very gracious man and superb craftsman.

Sad news indeed. We spoke several times over the years about stocking and checkering, and Doug was always helpful and encouraging. I told him in our last phone conversation that after several attempts I just did not have the patience or skill to checker. Send it to me, he said.
Condolences.

Doug was a good friend and a great stock maker. His leather covered pads were the best. Doug was a wealth of knowledge and always happily shared it with others. Doug attended our shoot in May and he seemed to be doing well. We were shocked when we got the news. Doug just finished checking and a leather pad for Sherry’s gun, probably his last work. We will miss him greatly!

I have searched the web several times for an obituary of Doug Mann but cannot find one. If anyone has a link to his obituary, please post it.

Doug Mann was a fine gentleman and a good friend. I always looked forward to visiting with him every year at the Southern Side X Side Championship. His death was very much unexpected. Doug was kind and generous to everyone, me included. His work was of the highest level, and he so enjoyed doing it. He will be greatly missed.
