"Point of order". Bait is something used on fish, on traps, or perhaps illegally in dove fields. It is also used to taunt or lure something or someone. Bate is the short form of abate. In this context I will not be baited into doing more research. One book on shotguns took 10 years. I haven't that much time left.

But I would still welcome the final 5-volume study on "Les Armuriers et Canonniers de Saint-Étienne" - un bref abrégé historique" ;-) :-P Carcano

Interesting French O/U 16 gauge. Of additional note, the receiver indicates the shotgun was made in St. Etienne, however it is also inscribed with "Avec Bascule importe d'Allegmangne" indicating that the gun's receiver was imported from Germany. No maker's mark are indicated on the gun from what I can see. Anyone have any ideas regarding the identity crisis that this 16 is having, or any other information? https://www.gunsinternational.com/g...h-o/u-16-ga-shotgun.cfm?gun_id=101540609Unless this was very inexpensive I would take 12ga Boucher at GI #103284822. Its 2&3/4" gun with weight of 6&1/4lb, no doubt that's going to leave on impressed.
