Yes, Merkel shotguns have very tight tolerances. Before you take it to a gunsmith or get impatient and crack the wood, slow down and find the sweet spot. With the barrels attached, gently open the action slightly, place the fore end on and gently move the barrel and action until you find that spot. Once you hit that spot, the fore end will engage. Each one is different.
