I have guns that have taken ten years to complete, many trips by mail, and some that have taken twenty or more. However, my late Purdey Whitworth barrel round action bar in steel hammer heavy proof pigeon gun was a stroke of luck, found in a retail store within forty miles of my home, and has not required the first trip to a gunsmith. What a wonderful gun Owen has. Unfortunately, at 80, I don't have thirty years to enjoy mine.

Stock by S. Dalzell, new screws & more stock work + firing pins & other mechanical overhaul by A. Chaber, hinge pin by D. Morgan, Holts bought case refurbished/fitted by K. Giles. Barrels measure 24 & 26 with recessed chokes skeet/IC. 1871 gun w/Barrels re-browned in ‘74 & BP reproof for 1 1/8oz, but I shoot 7/8 oz normally. Great bird gun and fun to pop clays as well.

Oddly, my Purdey pigeon gun came without a case. However, in searching through my junk pile, I found a great minty trunk case with Purdey label, a pair of Purdey snap caps and a Purdey marked ebony cleaning rod. The gun was purchased at $26,500 less than the marked price. I think it had been in the shop for many months before I spied it in a dark corner. Nothing like this has happened to me since.

I have done this very thing many times myself. Lots of personal satisfaction but the return on investment is almost always in the negative.
