410ga. shotguns are not for beginner's, they are the ''WORST'' Ruinners of game, with the 28ga, next. Those small pop guns are for the expect gunners .
I am quoting Charles Askins from his book, ''Shotguns'' He also states that ''If You aren't man enough too shoot a 12ga. You should take up ''Ping Pong''.
or maybe even ''Pool'' (I added the Pool part.)

What gauge gun is Mr. Askins shooting this week?

I'm not going to go out and buy a .410 just to make myself feel good about killing birds or breaking targets. And I'm not going to pay the added expense for .410 shells. I already have three reloaders going and I'd have to buy another one to reload .410 shells. For me it is more convenient just to use 12 gauge or 20 gauge and let it go. I have a 16 gauge Model 12 and I believe in 20 years I've used it one time. So for me - it is more convenient just to stick with a 12 or 20 depending on what I shoot. For that reason I've never had any interest in buying a .410. But good luck to those who do. As long as recoil doesn't bother me, I'll stick with the bigger guns.

No one that I know can explain the satisfaction that comes from using a .410 successfully. I can't. It has to be experienced to be understood, I suppose.

I agree, Stanton. I don't think I ever shot a .410 in my life. But it is good to see guys enjoy their guns and shoot them well- the way they do. I am happy for them, too. Good luck!!.

Ok, I must comment on the 410 as a starter gun. In southwest Iowa I got a Stevens 410 , bolt action, clip fed , gun to hunt with with my dad. First day out, I got a small hawk with a shot overhead. Soon after that I got a fox, then a jack rabbit [we had few of them], several cottontails and fox squirrels, then a mink that was chasing a rabbit down a ditch. That netted me $15 from the fur buyer, then. That was more than the gun cost. Big money for a kid. The fox I got had three broken legs from my shots. Those were the days. You could not replace a 410. Also, got a pheasant that landed in Little Tarkio Creek. My uncle said [teased] it just drowned, but I knew better. All at age 11-12.

I have shot so many doves in my 66 years of dove hunting that many years ago it became less fun to kill a limit with a 12, so I bought a 20 to become my dedicated dove gun. It went with me on two high volume dove trips to Cordoba. I killed literally thousands with it and 7/8 oz. loads (it's taken north of 9000).

About that time my grandson was beginning to go with me on dove shoots and was going to be using a.410 soon . I decided to take one and use it to try to take a limit, to prove to him that they weren't toys for kids.

I killed my limit that day with the little Yildiz .410 and was absolutely hooked. My grandson killed 8 on the wing, at 9 yrs. of age, on his first dove shoot. He was shooting a 26" barreled Stoeger .410 with 1/2 oz. loads.

People who preach that .410s are a terrible choice with which to introduce kids to hunting need to go on by me and preach to someone else.
