In times like these, there is high value in remembering.

On this very night - March 4th, 250 years ago - Geo. Washington and his men did what no one believed possible and few today are even aware: under cover of darkness and the rolling sound of cannonade they fortified and occupied the high ground south of Boston harbor and in so doing forced the withdrawal of Gen. Howe and the British troops holding the city. Howe himself said that his entire army couldn’t have done in 3 months what the colonialists did in one night.

Washington knew, beyond planning and logistics, what would really be necessary for success in this audacious effort: character and resolve.

“…every temporal advantage and comfort to us, and our posterity, depends upon the vigor of our exertions; in short, freedom or slavery must be the result of our conduct; there can therefore be no greater inducement to men to behave well.”

In times like these, there is high value in remembering.

I have a few books describing their efforts. The artillery had been captured from fort Ticondergoga by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold. Henry Knox transported them to Boston under unimaginable conditions.

I don't actually know if it's true but I have read it and Paul Harvey did broadcast it in his "Rest of the Story" series. They had the heights, the fortifications, the artillery....and no ammo. Howe didn't know that.

character, resolve...

and is the case when rebelling against British tyranny...

the sure knowledge that the hangman's noose awaits you should you fail to win your freedom...

the certainty of consequences is a wonderful motivator...

IMHO, it's not what they faced if they lost that motivated them. It was what they would gain should they succeed . . . . FREEDOM!!!

Stan, from my readings, the new england colonist , who made up the majority of washington's army laying siege to Boston...were a divided an insecure lot...

and freedom? from what?

up until only a few months ago, they were loyal englishmen, enjoying the rights and protection provided by the crown...

for the most part, only some of the scots an Irish among them had ever experienced the kings wrath and injustice...

Ken Burns's latest documentary "The American Revolution" covers all of these facts in detail but...sadly it adds-in a bunch of woke garbage with it as it goes along.

After I'd already paid for the privilege of viewing it with my wife, I saw the various criticisms (and confirmed them) and eventually stopped watching.

You really have to be selective anymore in what you deem to be a credible source of your news and information.

As Franklin observed, "we must all hang together or assuredly we shall hang separately". That might not be exact but it's darn close.

From excessive and burdensome taxation, ed. And, from the oppression of the British army. Did you not study about the Boston Tea Party in elementary school when you were supposedly a "cracker" in South Georgia?

You are falling for the exact same type of "bait and switch" put forth by supporters of Lincoln going into 1861.

Answer as you wish, but you won't goad me into extensive replies, as you always try to do.

Bye.
