The artillery had been captured from fort Ticondergoga by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold. Henry Knox transported them to Boston under unimaginable conditions. I don't actually know if it's true but I have read it and Paul Harvey did broadcast it in his "Rest of the Story" series. They had the heights, the fortifications, the artillery....and no ammo.
