Apparently H108 and W820 may be the more or less the same and faster burning than H110 which may be close to W296. Also apparently H108 does not require the pressure that H110 does to burn cleanly and is not as prickly in use as H110. Maybe that is why H108 works well in non-magnum small case loads.

Roy,

I need to dig out the mold to see which one, and I apparently put it someplace 'safe' that now I can't find. I suspect it's in the garage with the lead pot.

I'm loading up some 115gr LRN bullets I've sized to .300", using 11gr 4198 to start. I'm also putting together a batch of 135gr bullets with 12.0 and 11.0grs 4198 to see if that tightens things up. I'm trying to get ready for Rick's match and not have it all be a last minute scurry. I've got Lee sizing dies coming for .301" and .302" and maybe those will improve the groups. I do like their new system where you're just buying a sizing die and pusher that fit inside a breech lock holder that also catches the bullets in a bottle. To add the .301 and .302 dies to what I already had only cost $42 shipped from Lee.

Let me know if you want to try some of the bullets I'm sizing.

Re AA5 for 300 Rook, I don't have a rifle in that chambering, but I just missed out on buying a fairly priced H&H rook from Cabelas this week in 295 Rook, which I understand interchanges with 300 Rook. I really need to get Colin's book.

Chris,

Thank you, Yes, I would like to try the 135 gr Missouri Bullets #2 Whitetail LFN bullets.

The 295 rook and 300 rook are actually the same cartridge. H&H listed their cartridge as a 295 rook and I believe the rest of the industry used the term 300 rook.

Was the H&H a hammerless or hammer gun? I lost out on a beautiful H&H well engraved hammerless with excellent bore in Rock Island Auction a year ago. Now wish I had upped my bid as it was a nice rifle.

When winter breaks, I want to get to the range to also be better prepared for Rick's matches. I shot very poorly with my Lancaster DR in 360EX - the bullets tumbled and many missed or were sideways on the 50 yd target; the 100 yd target was a mess. I need to develop a good load for that rifle or use another DR.

Roy

Roy, I’ll get some bullets in the mail to you when we are back from Norway in a week. I should be able to post results from a range outing shortly after we are back as I had everything done loading right before we left. Chris

It was hammerless. Unfortunately, Cabelas site doesn't allow you to see listings for sold guns so my link is no good.

Was out at the range yesterday trying 11gr and 12gr of H4198 and the resized #2 Whitetail 135gr LFN bullets from Missouri Bullet. Velocity averaged 1407fps with 12gr and 1251fps with 11gr. Accuracy was better with the 12gr load, with groups of 1.5-2.0" at 50yrds. I also shot 115gr LRN bullets (#1 Carbine from Missouri Bullet, sized from .309 to .300"), with both 12 and 11gr of H4198. Accuracy was better with 11gr, with avg velocity of 1224fps. Shooting was done off a bench using a good condition Westley Richards Sherwood (martini) rifle.

I am a big fan of the Lee Bullet Sizer and Punch with their bottle kit. Just take the bullets, which have a band of smokeless lube, roll them in Rooster Jacket lube and press them through the die into the bottle that captures the resized bullets. Minimal effort, and little mess, although have a rag handy to wipe of the excess lube on that gets on the punch. I purchased additional sizing dies that go into this set up for $16 ea, so I can now also do .301 and .302". Haven't shot those yet.

The mold I was using to cast 140gr bullets for the Sherwood is by Accurate Molds, #30-140R. Casts a flat nose bullet very similar to the Missouri Bullet Co's #2 Whitetail.
