Just received the invoice for my shipment from England. Almost $1200 for 3 rifles. I'll have to back off on buying overseas until this tariff goes away.
Was the entire $1200.00 Tariff charges alone??? ... or did that include the usual shipping and import fees?
Any country that has been willing to negotiate Trade Policies that are fair to the United States has been able to dramatically reduce or eliminate Tariffs on sales and shipments to the U.S. Past Trade negotiations have left U.S. farmers, manufacturers, and workers at a huge monetary disadvantage for decades. And the countries who took advantage of us are understandably unwilling to give up the gravy train.
It's nice to have a President who actually is willing to do something to level the playing field and help U.S. citizens. Trump did what Congress was unwilling to do, all while they preached platitudes and accepted money from foreign lobbyists. I've endured layoffs and job losses due to offshoring and insane Trade Deals like NAFTA, GATT, etc., and I'm certain it has cost me a whole lot more than $1200.00 over the years.
Millions of U.S. workers have become eligible for costly job retraining benefits like TRA, ATA, extended Unemployment Benefits, etc., all at the taxpayers expense. Those are costs we've all been paying without even thinking about it. Millions of others have had to pull up roots and relocate after factory closures hollowed out their communities, and decimated their property values. Many ended up taking lower paying jobs, or even going on taxpayer funded Welfare and Food Stamp assistance programs. The ripple effect has led to reduced income tax revenues that support schools, Police, Fire Departments, etc.
The treatment may cause some temporary pain, but I believe it will help make all of us stronger, more secure, and more prosperous in the long run. Look at photos of Detroit, Los Angeles, and other large manufacturing centers now and 60 years ago, and tell me the path we've been on was a good thing.
