I'll try ( I've never totally confirmed my understanding ). It was W.W. Greener's supposedly "proprietary" barrel material (& rather late in the game) that had a higher steel content than normal Damascus.

I'm sure there's more to it than that but my many attempts to further clarify it have fallen short so-far.

Here you go
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hph1QPAVDHd_KvHLrejKVykigwGgvMLFl4K6Ru6Dcig/edit?tab=t.0

It was not part of the 1891 Birmingham Proof House Trial report, and is not the same as the winner 'English Best Laminated Steel', but likely similar.

Thanks Dr. Drew.

I've seen that before and I'm still not sure what I know about it (other than what I mentioned earlier). The photography of it looks pretty cool.

This is the best description I've seen so-far:

"Best Silver Steel Damascus barrels contain over 70% of the finest steel, and it is the systematic twisting and arrangement of the iron and steel bars, as they are welded together and beaten into a flat ribbon before being coiled into the form of a tube, that give the beautiful figure or pattern observed in a first-class twist barrel..."

WW Greener was famous for making a number of claims about his (and his father's) guns and sadly, I find it hard to separate the facts from all the "puffery". I guess I have surmised that "silver steel damascus" was the last attempt to make a composite steel barrel that would compete well with the more modern fluid steels of the period.

They can't be very common as I have never seen one in person (& I have tried to find one for years now).

Greener joined the new-fangled fluid steel club with his proprietary "Greener’s Wrought Steel Indestructible by Gunpowder”

Dr. Drew: A curiosity...was "Wrought Steel" sourced from Whitworth's or was it something WW came up with elsewhere?
