My FIL never hunted during the time I knew him but took great amusement shooting the vast numbers of Black birds that scavenged his garden in the fall. He used a well worn hardware store 12 ga single that came from his fathers dairy. He’d hit me up every year for a handful of shells and would ground swat them in the evenings.
I was mowing and noticed quite a number of black birds littering his back yard. I stopped to ask him about all the birds. He said he had made his PB shot of 25 (one shot) with a wry grin.

After he passed, I took his old single barrel, cleaned it up, and placed it in the garage to dispatch varmints as needed.

A big old yellow stray cat a been scrapping with the wife’s bob tail cat and she had enough of
It.

We were working in her flower garden when a cat fight broke out in the back yard. I grabbed the old single barrel, stuck a load of sixes in it as the cat rounded the corner of the house at full tilt. I made my best move on it and rolled the the cat head first.
As I turned to my wife I noted her face had the same grin as her Pop had! 😀

I won't share the story about my neighbor's cat because he may have friends on this site.

I came across the video and remembered this posting and thought it might add something.

I'd already forgotten about this thread, but it reminded me of something that happened about a week ago.

My son had a stray tomcat that had been peeing on the hood of his pickup at night. It had gotten into the fresh air vent. You can imagine how nice that was.

He bought a live trap and caught the stinking stray. I drove up to his shop that morning and saw it in the trap. He asked me to shoot it as he released it from the live trap. I replied that I only had a Wingmaster with a 34" trap barrel in the truck, and with it's tight choke I might miss. He laughed and said to give it a rip.

All I had was 8s but got ready and pre mounted. The big tom streaked out like a blur but I caught up with him and, well, let's just say he never knew what hit him.

Immensely satisfying. If there's anything I dislike more than a stray cat I don't know what it is yet.

I took a trapped cat out to the gun club. A friend opened that Havahart trap while I stood by with a trap gun. That cat was about out of range before I could get one shot off. We never did see that cat again. From that time forward, I have used the underwater method.
