I have recently had the opportunity of examining this plain Cogswell and Harrison non-ejector, made in 1907 when it would have been the bottom of their range of machine made London made guns from their factory at Gillingham Street, close to Victoria Station. It would have retailed for about 12 guineas.

It is fitted with a concealed cross bolt, and is tidily made with quite a quite attractive piece of walnut (sorry about the reflections!).

It has clearly been refinished, with a brushed coin-finished action, but is still in the original proof size, and weighs in at 6lb 2 oz., with 28 inch barrels.

The tubes are trade marked ARCUS compressed steel and I suspect were imported from Germany. At the time Purdey, Edwinson Green, Tobin and many others bought in Krupp tubes from that country.

That time period 1901-1914 is somewhat of a lost era in my knowledge of London gun-making. Starting with barrel importation there are lots of questions about where the City gun trade was going at the time. I know O/U's were firing up courtesy of Boss, short barrels from Churchill, Holland & Holland had opened their factory. .etc., but still it takes a simple gun like this to get the fires of curiosity rekindled. Thanks. (Where did the Walnut come from?)
