Hi folks,

Curious , insights, etc. So I just purchased a custom 1903 Springfield by Goudy/Waldron in .257 Roberts. It’s a fine little rifle - I’ve got some G&Hs, etc. and it’s every bit as nice. First gun I’ve eve owned with a leather covered recoil pad!

Here’s my question, seems the gun was done during the 1990s - obviously people were still doing custom sporters on Springfields then - subject this rifle. However, am I correct I thinking this was really late in the show to be building on that action - I mean it’s a wonderful action but by that time hadn’t most folks moved on to mostly other actions for customs? Related, if I am in fact correct, why do you think someone would have chosen to build on the Springfield action then? Don’t get me wrong, I think the action is great, I was just surprised to come across as nicely of done custom Springfield that late in the show. I wonder if the person who commissioned it was looking for something somewhat retro like a very traditional 1930s era Springfield sporter. I’m have more of a pre WWII taste in my rifles so I guess I’m surprised I turned up with one done fairly recently. If anyone wonders on the serial number it’s double heat Trae mid 900,000s - it’s also got a Hatcher hole.

Here’s a link to the rifle’s add on guns international - thanks in advance folks!

You’ve got a beautiful rifle. I agree, I haven’t seen so many custom rifles built on 1903 actions in recent decades, but I think it’s one of the most elegant actions. Some of my favorite rifles of all time are th G&H spotters and Wundhammers built on 1903 actions. I know Ed Lapour was manufacturing safeties for 1903’s well into the 2000’s, so the custom conversion market was still strong enough to support that. Let us know how it shoots!

Mpb, You seem to have asked a question that isn't possible to answer except to say the guy liked Springfields. This whole site runs on nostalgia. The latest trends in gun design don't get much play here. If you can't find a custom rifle from the 30s that fits your needs, build one or have someone do it for you. Your new one will find wide appeal among the folks here.
