Great video, as usual from Jonny, But I have a question from forever: what is this British obsession with shorts in the thorn brush? I know it's warm there, but shorts as de rigeur in the African landscape where every bush has a thorn? I know long pants aren't armor, but bare legs all the time with rare exception? Seems nuts to me...

Not just shorts, but shortie shorts.
It's an African white folks thing, I think. I wear shorts, too, when it gets hot enough. Even working on the farm. But, I like 'em just above the knee.
I met a young South African white guy here about three years ago on a sandbar at the river (I know, crazy, right?). He was wearing the same kind of shortie shorts.

… but shorts as de rigeur in the African landscape … Deeply embedded cultural carryover from colonial days. As were over-calf socks with shorts for Sundays and other more formal settings.

Having spent a lot of time on foot in African bush, when it is hot I wear short shorts because I prefer getting my legs scratched by thorns over roasting in long pants.

Interesting that some of the native South African blacks were wearing long pants in that video. I would assume that they have been there all their lives, too.
What explains that, LGF, other than personal preference?
