Any load that fits in a 2 3/4" 6 crimp-8 crimp will fit into a 2 1/2" hull roll crimped.

I will second the dowel and exacto knife trimmer. I went to table saw route the bandsaw route and a few other things. And absolutely nothing can touch a fitted dowel with a blade.

Also, what sort of angle constitutes a normal throat/ chamber cone? What is considered a long cone?

And I suppose I should ask, if the longer cone is producing less pressure, what is the trade off that prevents all manufacturers from making longer chamber cones?

I had the throat on my merkels chamber lengthened. It seemed like a nice idea when I wanted to be shooting steel through it. Briley did it when they installed the tubes.

For 16 ga. I cut a piece of electrical schedule 40, 3/4 PVC to a correct length. I slip a 2 3/4 hull in the pipe and trim the excess with an exacto knife. I load a low end charge of SR-4756, I think it's a Remington wad, insert an over shot card and it roll crimps just fine, looks just like the old roll crimped paper hulls. I crimp them on my drill press. What little is left of the star crimp is meaningless. If it bothers you, get a BPI Spin Doctor.

There is absolutely no reason not to buy a shotgun chambered for 2 1/2 in. hulls. They are easily reloaded and the ammo is available. I own one shotgun chambered for 2 3/4 hulls...and it hasn't been used in 20 years. All my others are 2 1/2 in., 16 ga.

Brent: previous thread about lengthening cones to mitigate the rise in pressure with using long for chamber shells
https://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=621506

Bell's study did suggest that cone lengthening will indeed decrease the pressure rise.

Although removing metal obviously does not make a barrel stronger, because angle of the cones is sharper than the external taper of the barrels, cones can be lengthened BY AN EXPERT and the resultant wall thickness is about the same as the end of chamber wall thickness.

Up until the magic of long cones marketing started, the standard was 3/4 - 1" but some European makers used even shorter cones.
