I have three 2” guns made by Arthur Howell in Birmingham, and all are marked “JA” under the barrels. One was retailed by W. Hodgson, Ripon, one by Henry Monk, Chester, and the 3rd by R. Robinson, Hull.

It is my understanding that those machined barreled actions were sourced from Joseph Asbury, sometime before Asbury’s equipment was purchased by A.A. Brown.

He is a wonderful dog. On Wednesday, we hunted our 15th Closing Day of Pheasant Hunting to go with our 15 Opening Days of Pheasant Hunting. 15 yrs without a miss. It has been a great run.

We have a new puppy waiting for me in California. In about 4 weeks, I'll be picking it up. Always looking for suggestions for call names, if anyone has one to give away.

And raw eggs are great for dogs, especially when they are home-raised duck eggs. Gus is living proof of that having eaten roughly 5296 of them so far.

Perhaps a little research on that topic would help?

I can ask my wife for a library's worth of references for you if you would like. No problem. It's what she does.

In my experience….the JA markings are for Joseph Asbury’s. Asbury’s probably made the entire gun. Possibly delivering it in the white or even fully finished. I can be almost certain that the action is marked with a JA as well. I’ve had various JA guns on my bench…some have Greener lever work, others have had Scott spindles, I currently own a Linsley Bros that is a JA made gun…it has a very odd spindle system in it where it uses a pin mounted in the spindle, and the leg of the top lever spring rest on that pin. Odd. I’ve never seen another like it.

I just came across this older discussion re: 2 inch 12 gauge English made shotguns. A very interesting read. Regarding Joseph Asbury, I recently discovered a link stating that he built most of the barrels and actions for Skimin & Wood who supplied the trade. Joseph Asbury

Here is another 2" 12 gauge to add to the discussion, a J&W Tolley. This gun has 26" barrels and is choked LB .045 and RB .013. The MWT is LB .019 and RB .017. The gun weights 5lbs 8oz. The barrels carry the JA stamp being made by Joseph Asubury and it appears to have a date code of 1938-39.
