Shooting my 1886 Reilly side-lever ejector this past weekend suddenly came to an abrupt end. I could not load shells and close the gun. I can take the front-end off and close the gun with shells.

but then cannot attach the front end. the ejector rod is stuck in this position. I can unload it, take front-end off, put barrels on, lock the barrels down with shells but the ejector rod is then stuck.

Gunter says something is hung up and if I drive down he might be able to fix it as I wait. I'd enjoy the ride and hanging out in Rocky Mount in the middle of no-where is always un-boring. Suggestions for an easy fix before I hit the road?
By the way two years ago Gunter said the ejector spring on the right barrel is worn to the point of needing a replacement - he adjusted it to the best he could (and I really don't need ejectors). Abe Chaber said he can build it back up. what to do?
