Having competed with roundball percussion rifles for many years, at the state and national level, I see nothing wrong with how they rest the barrels on the sandbag while shooting. I won lots of matches in the LWBR (lightweight bench rest) class doing so. My M.O. was/is to shoot off the sandbags enough, at different locations along the barrel, until I find that sweet spot where the rifle groups the best. Then, adjust the sights to where they need to be at that range.

I never found a roundball rifle that grouped best while resting the fore-stock on the bag (except for full stocked long rifles, obviously). Also obviously, one cannot always hold the rifle at some precise spot along the barrel with the forward hand, when hunting or offhand shooting, but one doesn't expect the same level of accuracy when shooting offhand as one does when shooting off sandbags, either. Some prefer to hold the rifle in their forward hand while resting it on the front sandbag, to replicate a hunting shot. I have no issue with doing so, but I used the very same rifles for offhand comp that I did for LWBR comp and never experienced any deleterious effects from my methods.
