Lyme disease is well-known and spread by the deer tick, which has a reddish posterior. Then there is a red meat allergy, which is fatal, spread by the Lone Star tick. It has a white dot on its back.
Tick repellent with Permethrin sprayed on clothing is a very effective repellent, and repellents with DEET for the skin.
Please keep yourself safe from ticks!
Unbelievably, some people want to spread the ticks to stop people from eating red meat to "save the planet". NO JOKE!

Some people don't realize that if you park out in a field, they can hitch hike home in/on your car. I have brought home at least two that way. How do I know? Because I was at a cruise in and we all parked out in a field a day or two before I found them crawling up the screen door trying to get out. And my garage is pretty much sealed up- plus the fact that I have no ticks in my yard.

Tom Seaver died from more serious illnesses that originally started out with Lyme disease. Sometimes you can get bitten by smaller nymph sized ticks that you don't really see. It almost keeps me from taking my dog out to hunt.

The red meat allergy is called Alpha Gel Syndrome. It is not fun, but it is also not usually fatal. There have been cases of anaphylactic reaction, but generally the reaction to red meat is a more typical allergic reaction i.e. itching, hives, rash, GI issues etc. I know two guys that have had it and both recovered. Each case required 2- 2.5 years to fully get over it.
