I love them all. In fact if money allows it I strongly recommend one of each make so you can see and enjoy them all for yourself.

If I only had one it would be a thousand dollar grade Lefever.

While there are plenty of fine American classics, my personal favorite is an Ithaca Flues Grade 4 in 12 guage. My father gave it to me as a gift about 30 years ago and I have used it field regurally since. It has proven to be a very trustworthy arm and has been an absolute joy to have.

Perhaps it's my plebeian upbringing ...... I'd pick Flues, NIDs and Nitros ..... and forgive the sacrilege ....... M37's.

I think George Newbern hit it squarely on the head, based on the intent of the origina question. NID first--then LC/Fox.

For the turn of the century guns, I'd go with the darkhorse Remington 1894s. Built kinda thick 'n beefy and best fit the life and times.
Steel barrel era would go to the Phila. made AH Fox guns - the tops of all the American guns.
My picks of these would be in the lower grades, just as were hunted back in those good ol'grandpa days.
Anything higher, better go English and get the whole package.
